Neue Erinnerungen (El Arbi Bouqdib Archive)

Neue Erinnerungen (El Arbi Bouqdib Archive)
18 August – 6 October 2024

New Memories (El Arbi Bouqdib Archive) explores contemporary myth-making through the life and work of El Arbi Bouqdib, a Moroccan-Berber mathematician, poet, and Quran scholar. This exhibition, featuring filmmakers, a composer, a sculptor, and conceptual artists, delves into Bouqdib’s legacy through diverse artistic lenses.
Bouqdib, a fascinating figure united seemingly opposing concepts like rationality and faith, physics and metaphysics. The El Arbi Bouqdib Archive (EBA), established in 2017, preserves his work and opens it to a collective exploration across disciplines.
This exhibition not only examines the creation of poetic biographies but also reflects on the nature of memory itself. Each artwork becomes a ‘New Memory,’ contributing to a subjective reconstruction of Bouqdib’s unique cosmos.
The exhibition space, resembling a laboratory, showcases fourteen works that form a dense and fragmentary network. Stars, geometric forms, and cosmic dimensions weave together with number sequences and codes, inviting exploration and interpretation. The works raise questions about their own nature and the boundaries between art and artifact.
